October, 5, 1791 - Joseph De Ribas as a plenipotentiary from ' Russia signed Yassy peace treaty with Turkey which ratified joining of the new lands — Novorossia — to the Russian crown May, 27, 1794 — Catherine II's rescript about construction of the city and the port Khadzhibei i August, 22 (September 2, new style), 11794 — Odessa and the port were founded

December, 6, 1796 —Catherine/I died, Paul I ascended to the throne — several black years in the history of the city began 1800 — having received an offering °f "fruits of orange", Paul I announced of a large loan for the city construction and about a 14 year extension of privileges granted to the Odessans by Catherine II 1803 — the duke de Richelieu began to govern the city

June, 25, 1846 — a regular shipping line was opened between Odessa and the Danube ports

April, 10, 1854- Odessa was bombarded by an English-French squadron during the Crimean war. Landing of troops was thwarted and the British frigate "Tiger" was sunk by the fire of the coastal artillery 1855—1862 — under the general-governor A.G. Stroganov a gradual industrialization of the city economy took place. Since 1863 count Stroganov was the first elected mayor of the city

1863 — new Regulations about civic administration of Odessa were introduced due to A.G. Stroganov's solicitation according to which the ^issues of the city's inner arrangement were transferred to the City's parliament (Duma) and the city mayor

1865 — the Richelieu Lyceum was transformed into The University of Novorossia

1867—1878 — under the mayor ship of N.A. Novoselsky Odessa became the best-planned and most comfortable city in Russia

September, 9, 1873 — the birth of Odessa water supply system that gave the city good water from the Dniester River. The event was marked by opening of the fountain on the Cathedral Square

1878-1895 — the city well-being was in the authority of the city head G. G. Marazli — one of the richest citizens, a sponsor and philanthropist. The list of his donations to the city would take several pages

1887— a beautiful building of the City Theater was erected (now the Opera and Ballet Theater — an architectural gem of Odessa). The first electrical bulbs in the city were lit up in the theater chandeliers

1910 — the All-Russia Art and Industry Fair was held in Odessa

1917-1920 - in the years of the revolution and the civil war the power in the city was many times passed from hand to hand, until the final capture of Odessa by the Red Army on February, 7, 1920 took place

August, 5, 1941 — the beginning of a heroic 73-day long defense of Odessa

October, 16, 1941 — the beginning of the Nazi' occupation of the city

April, 10, 1944 — the Liberation Dt — Odessa was cleared from th occupants. The port and the city] began to be restored

October 1944 — the first ships after, the liberation of the city were admitted and unloaded in the Odessa port

1946 — the port of Odessa exceeded, the pre-war rates. The Antarctic flotilla "Slava" ("Glory") began whaling 1965 — the Maritime museum — the only one in the country — was created in Odessa

1968 — the sea passenger terminal was opened

1973 — a one-million citizen was registered in the city

1994 — in the year of Odessa 's bicentennial by the decision of the city council most streets of the central part of the city were given' back their old, pre-revolutionary historic names.

1996 — the full-scale restoration works on preservation of the Odessa^ gem — Opera and Ballet Theater started

2000 — the beginning of the reconstruction of the city shrine — The Cathedral of Transfiguration of Savior which was destroyed in the times of the Soviet power. On January, 7 — the day of the Orthodox Christmas, the stately ceremony of inauguration of the cathedral's belfry took place

November, 10, 2005 — the re-burial (deposition) of the bodies of the Vorontsovs' couple in the restored Cathedral of Transfiguration of Savior

2007 — with a formal ceremony after many years of restoration Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater was re­opened
